Bay Area Adventures//Grounded and Sank

The Tennessee Valley trail, often referred to as the “best” hike in Marin is more of a lazy stroll than a hike.  It runs 1.75 miles from a parking area next to the Miwok riding stables to the beautiful Tennessee Cove at the ocean. The trail starts out flat and paved with asphalt and about  half way there the pavement runs out and the trail gets a bit hilly. It’s an easy walk that most  youngsters (5+) should have no problem with.  The trail passes through beautiful wildflower meadows and tall grasses.  And if you’re lucky  you’ll spy hawks, deer, and rumor has it an occasional bobcat.  Mostly, I love the anticipation of what awaits me at the end of the trail. The incredible Tennessee Cove –  a small, secluded beach perfect for a picnic, a quiet walk, exploring, or even an afternoon nap (not suitable for swimming).  I love this outing for a quick recharge, it’s so close to home, but yet it feels like another world.
An interesting bit of history and an explanation of the beach’s name is sometimes on view. In 1853, the steamer Tennessee was grounded and sank on this beach. All passengers and crew made it ashore, but the ship was lost. When the tide is low you can see the steam wheel of the ship, so they say.
Getting there from Oakland:
Take the Richmond Bridge and exit Sir Francis Drake Blvd.  Merge onto 101 South, exit at the  Mill Valley/Shoreline Highway. Go towards Stinson Beach, turn left on Tennessee Valley Rd. The road dead-ends into the parking area.
