For over twenty-six years, I have had the privilege to call Oakland home and the pleasure to explore its many back roads. In spite of all the rapid changes Oakland and the Bay Area has experienced the last quarter century, I’ve discovered that it’s not all urban sprawl, inter-states and strip malls. So I’ve decided to share with you and your family some of my favorite Bay Area adventures. They may be dirt tracks, mountain trails, green open-spaces, bays and city streets. However, they are the right paths for people who don’t want to know what to expect around the next corner, but want to find out. I hope they lead you and your family to undiscovered wonderful places you can enjoy together. Most importantly, you’ll discover just what makes Oakland and the Bay Area such a great place to live.
The Wonder of Muir Woods
Just about an hour from Oakland you can enjoy a beautiful, ancient redwood forest that is truly unique for just $3 per person. The winding drive to the forest through the Marin Headland hills is truly special. Make sure to dress a little warmer, the redwoods reach for all the sun they can get, and the forest floor tends to be cool and damp. There are 3 walks, from one-half hour to 1.5 hours, and much longer hikes if you wish. The forest park is actually paved to make it easy for wheelchairs and strollers. The longer hikes are unpaved. The 560 acre park includes six miles of paved, mostly level trails on the canyon floor. The amazing coast redwoods are the tallest living things on the planet and range in age from 800-1000 years old. For directions and more information visit npr.gov.
