Fort Funston is a rugged stretch of coastal headlands, sand, and dunes south of Ocean Beach. In some places, the dunes reach heights of 200 feet or more and is simply breathe taking. At the foot of Fort Funston’s cliffs is a wild and windy beach, great for walking, jogging or even horseback riding (Mar Vista Stables). On the beach, you’ll see shells, sand dollars, seaweed, and loads of marine life. I love this beach for all it’s rugged beauty, however, if you like to wade in the ocean, beware of riptides – actually rip “currents.” Your best bet here is hiking and jogging just south past Center Hole. The area from Center Hole to Mussel Rock feels like a lost beach. It’s also a fantastic doggy getaway, one of the few off-leash parks in the Golden Gate National Park system.
Not up for a hike and just want to be entertained? Fort Funston has that too. Fort Funston is one of the premier hang-gliding spots in the nation. Between late March and October, hang-gliders fill the skies. A wooden viewing deck hugs the hillside at Fort Funston, right off the parking area, and offers spectacular views of soaring hang-gliders and the coastline.
